Three-Body Kick to a Bright Quasar out of Its Galaxy During a Merger

چکیده

The quasar HE0450-2958 was recently discovered to reside ∼ 7 kpc away from a galaxy that was likely disturbed by a recent merger. The lack of a massive spheroid of stars around the quasar raised the unlikely suggestion that it may have formed in a dark galaxy. Here we explain this discovery as a natural consequence of a dynamical kick imparted to the quasar as it interacted with a binary black hole system during a galaxy merger event. The typical stalling radius (∼ 1pc) for a ∼ 109M⊙ binary provides a kick of order the escape velocity of the stellar spheroid, bringing the quasar out to around the observed radius before it turns around. This is consistent with the observed low relative velocity between the quasar and the merger-remnant galaxy. The gas carried with the black hole throughout the three-body interaction fuels the quasar for the duration of its journey, ∼ 2× 10 years. Gravitational radiation recoil could not have produced the required kick.

The Relation between Quasar and Merging Galaxy Luminosity Functions and the Merger-induced Star Formation Rate of the Universe

Using a model for the self-regulated growth of supermassive black holes in mergers involving gas-rich galaxies, we study the relationship between quasars and the population of merging galaxies and, as a consequence, predict the merger-induced star formation rate density of the Universe. These mergers drive nuclear inflows of gas, fueling starbursts and “buried” quasar activity until feedback en...

The Relation between Quasar and Merging Galaxy Luminosity Functions and the Merger-driven Star Formation History of the Universe

Using a model for the self-regulated growth of supermassive black holes in mergers involving gas-rich galaxies, we study the relationship between quasars and the population of merging galaxies and thereby predict the merger-driven star formation rate density of the Universe. In our picture, mergers drive gas inflows, fueling nuclear starbursts and “buried” quasars until feedback disperses the g...

The impact of dust in host galaxies on quasar luminosity functions

We have investigated effects of dust attenuation on quasar luminosity functions at z ∼ 2 using a semi-analytic galaxy formation model combined with a large cosmological N-body simulation. We estimate the dust attenuation of quasars self-consistently with that of galaxies by considering the dust in their host bulges. We find that the luminosity of the bright quasars is strongly dimmed by the dus...

Effect and Durability of Eight-Week of Core Stability Training on Body Balance and Force of Direct Foot Kick in Young Men Jeet Kune Do (Wushu) Players With Somatotype Emphasis

Objective: Since direct foot kick is one of the most important strikes in Jeet Kune Do, its effectiveness depends on both the force of the hit and balance control during and after the hit execution, this study undertaken to examine the effect and persistence of eight-week of core stability training on balance and force of a direct foot kick of elite young male Jeet Kune Do (Wushu) athletes. Me...

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...
